Myself and Adam John are working on our capstones together. Our capstone will be a 2D side scrolling platformer/action game. (think Contra, Metal Slug or Blackthorne) It will feature all original pixel art, sound effects and music. It will probably be a little bit slower paced than Contra and Metal Slug, but quicker than Blackthorne.
Pound Town will be a noir story with bright saturated colors, kind of like Dick Tracy. It will have over the top game play with a cover system. It will feature the look of 8/16 bit graphics, not the smooth flash art of today.
We hope to present the game in a custom built arcade cabinet and are very excited to be working on a project like this.

ReplyDeleteAwesome! That kind of thing is right up my alley! I'd like to play it already. I've been working on a side scrolling flash game, I actually have most of the engine done. (And that was amazing because I am NOT a programmer) Good luck

ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I love that you are going to use a cabinet. Takes me back to the days of video arcades. The Dick Tracey feel is also a nice touch.

ReplyDeleteI do really like this idea especially since your paying HUGE homage to the classic age of gaming. I love that your using good solid games as inspiration and you're even going to make a cabinet for it. Only thing I possibly question on this idea is the most horrid dreaded question of all time... does it have the konomi code?! :p

ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool, are you going all out with 8 bit music as well, or will you go with newer music?

ReplyDeleteI like the custom built cabinet idea. It's truly a lost art form. You could really present your game in a unique way if you did that. I remember when all the arcades used to have cool art on the sides of all their cabinets. You never really get that too much anymore or if you do they are really crappy and generic.

ReplyDeletesounds cool man, Metal Slug was a classic game...I love side scroller games and I am a true believer of the thought that 2D games will never die out. Go for it man!

ReplyDeleteMichael Hicks - I read about this on another blog but I don't think it mentioned possibly having an arcade cabinet for the finished project. That would be awesome if you could pull it off.
ReplyDeleteI really like your idea. It brings back memories of when I was younger; playing Contra for hours at a time. Done well, these games can be quite addictive.
